Opioids are a major class of analgesics, used for the effective relief of pain and other symptoms.
Although opioids are effective in pain management, they can also have side effects, one of which is constipation. Opioid medicines can affect the gut in many ways such as reducing motility and secretions, which in turn leads to constipation. This is known as opioid-induced constipation (OIC).
OIC is a common and sometimes uncomfortable side effect which can occur in patients who are prescribed opioids.
A number of patients receiving palliative care may be experiencing OIC.
